Jak upravit délku horního táhla pro různé nářadí
The top link is the single most adjusted component on the 3 point hitch, yet its correct setting is frequently misunderstood. Many operators set the top link once when a new implement is first connected and leave it unchanged for the entire season — or for years. The top link length determines the implement’s pitch angle relative to the ground surface, which directly affects tillage depth uniformity, mower cut quality, and the efficiency with which mounted implements transfer draft load to the tractor drawbar. A top link set too long or too short for the application produces measurable performance losses and can accelerate wear in both the implement and the hitch linkage.
This guide explains what the top link length controls, how to set it correctly for the main implement categories, and when to re-adjust during a working season.
What the Top Link Controls
The top link connects the upper mast of the implement to the tractor’s top link attachment point on the rear axle housing. Its length determines the angle of the implement frame relative to the horizontal — the pitch angle. Shortening the top link tilts the front of the implement frame downward (nose-down pitch). Lengthening it tilts the front of the implement frame upward (nose-up pitch).
For most implements, the ideal pitch sets the working element — tines, disc blades, cutter bar — at the angle specified in the implement manual for the target working depth and forward speed. This angle is not the same for all implements, and it changes with working depth and soil condition for tilling implements.
Correct Top Link Settings by Implement Type
Mouldboard and disc ploughs
The top link on a plough sets the attack angle of the share and mouldboard. The implement manual specifies a pitch that produces a share running level with the base of the furrow. Typically this means the plough beam runs approximately level or slightly nose-down when viewed from the side at working depth. Set the top link to achieve this by observing the implement in the furrow, not by measuring at rest on flat ground — the hitch geometry changes significantly between the transport position and the working position at depth.
Rotary tillers and cultivators
For rotary tillers, the top link length determines how the rotor hood sits relative to the rotor — affecting soil throw and surface finish. Most manufacturers specify the rotor shaft horizontal when at working depth. Adjust the top link until the rotor gearbox input shaft appears level when viewed from the side at the target working depth, then fine-tune based on the surface finish observed in the first pass.
Rotary mowers and toppers
The top link on a rotary mower sets the deck pitch angle, which determines whether the front or rear of the deck is cutting lower. Most mower manufacturers recommend a slight nose-down pitch of 1–3 degrees — the front edge of the deck is slightly lower than the rear — which produces a cleaner cut and prevents the discharged material from being re-cut by the blade trailing edge. Set the top link so the deck appears level or very slightly nose-down when measured with a spirit level across the deck skids at the working height.
Box blades and landscape rakes
For rear blades and landscape implements, the top link length determines the blade’s cutting angle relative to the ground. A shorter top link (nose-down pitch) causes the leading edge of the blade to dig in and cut aggressively. A longer top link (nose-up pitch) causes the blade to scrape rather than cut, suitable for fine grading and smoothing. Adjust between these extremes based on the material being moved and the finish required.
