The transmission shaft, commonly known as the PTO Shaft, is the mechanical bridge that transfers rotational energy from the tractor's rear output to the implement's gearkasse. Without a precision-balanced shaft, energy is lost through vibration, potentially damaging the tractor's internal drive gears or the implement's mounting ears (Ear).

Working Principle: The Physics of Motion
The transmission shaft converts the rotational energy of the tractor engine into linear mechanical work. As the tractor's PTO output spins, the yokes transfer this torque through the universal joints. These joints allow for a constant velocity even when the shaft is at an angle. The energy then travels through the telescopic tubes into the implement's gearkasse, where it is further modulated for speed or torque.

How to Select the Right Shaft

Can I use a Series 4 shaft on a tractor that originally came with Series 1?
Yes, you can upgrade to a higher series for more durability. However, never downgrade to a lower series, as the torque will likely twist the tubes or break the universal joints.
What causes a transmission shaft to vibrate excessively?
The most common causes are worn-out cross journals, bent telescopic tubes, or the shaft operating at an extreme angle (over 25 degrees). Vibration can eventually destroy your gearkasse input seal.
How do I know if I need to cut my PTO shaft to a shorter length?
When the implement is raised, there must be at least 1-2 inches of clearance between the ends of the tubes. If the tubes "bottom out," they will exert massive pressure on the tractor's internal drive.
Why does my shear bolt keep snapping?
Shear bolts are designed to break to protect your gearaksel and gearbox. If it snaps frequently without hitting an obstruction, check if you are using the correct grade of bolt (standard is usually Grade 8.8).
Is a slip clutch better than a shear bolt?
A slip clutch is ideal for machines that encounter frequent heavy resistance (like tillers), while shear bolts are more cost-effective for machines like finish mowers.
Can I replace just the universal joint or do I need a whole new shaft?
If the tubes are straight and the yokes are undamaged, replacing just the cross journal is a very economical repair. We stock all individual components for Kubota series.
How do I identify a Kubota 21-spline shaft?
Simply count the teeth on the shaft end. 21-spline is a "fine" spline used for high-HP (1000 RPM) applications, whereas the standard 540 RPM tractors use 6-spline.
Does the PRR shaft come with a safety chain?
Yes, all our shafts include safety chains for the plastic shield. These must be attached to the tractor and implement to prevent the shield from spinning.
